Hosted on May 21st, 2026, the symposium highlighted research initiatives on Puerto Rico at UC Davis.

In a new internship with the City of Davis, UC Davis students are helping the city better meet the needs of its Spanish speaking residents. A cohort of five students spent months working with city staff, learning best practices when it comes to translating content such as city documents, press releases, public service announcements and social media posts.  

On a sun soaked, 78-degree evening in April, a mix of students and faculty huddled on blue blankets and concrete steps near the School of Education Building while a large, portable JBL speaker played music from one of the most popular artists in the world right now: Bad Bunny.

What effect do heavily fortified national borders have on the natural environments that surround them? In Border Biomes, Emily Celeste Vázquez Enríquez explores this question by analyzing contemporary Mexican, Latinx, and Indigenous literature that has tried to highlight the human and ecological toll of Mexico’s borders with the United States and Guatemala.

Professor Robert Irwin's new book, Movilidades Humanas en las Américas: entre regímenes de expulsión, políticas de contención e industrias del cuidado, co-edited by Colombian professors Yuliet Bedoya and Kelly Muñoz, has been published by the Universidad de San Buenaventura (Bogotá, Colombia) and is available as a free digital download. Jonathan presented on the panel Thinking with Plants and Animals Through Latin American Texts, which served as the formal launch of the book Plants and Animals in Latin American Cultural Production (University of Florida Press), co-edited by Cristina E. Pardo Porto and Oscar A. Pérez. Jonathan's  peer-reviewed chapter focuses on yerba mate and combines an analysis of the contemporary documentary Raídos (2016) with ethnographic fieldwork conducted in yerba mate plantations in the Triple Border region of Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay.

Haley presented “Children of the Sea: Transoceanic Feminist Solidarities in La marejada de los muertos y otras pandemias by Ana María Fuster Lavín” at NWSA 2025 (Nov. 13-16) in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Regarding her experience, she said, “Being able to attend and to share my own work and learn from and network with others at a conference that centers women and gender in Puerto Rico was an invaluable experience.”
