SPA 170 — Introduction to Latin American Culture - Imaginarios latinoamericanos: política religiosa y religiosidad política

Este curso te invita a explorar cómo lo religioso y lo político se mezclan en distintas expresiones de la cultura latinoamericana: canciones, tatuajes, santos populares, cuentos, novelas, series de televisión e incluso en narrativas del narco. Vamos a analizar cómo la religión puede convertirse en un refugio frente a la crisis, cómo algunos héroes populares son vistos como héroes, y cómo emociones como la fe, el miedo, la esperanza o la rabia movilizan a las personas y dan forma a comunidades y luchas colectivas.
Exploraremos también cómo lo politico puede adquirir formas casi religiosas: líderes carismáticos que movilizan multitudes como profetas, símbolos patrios tratados como sagrados, y emociones colectivas que se experimentan tanto en templos como en plazas. Analizaremos el auge del evangelismo, las respuestas religiosas frente a la pobreza, y cómo los medios masivos representan la fe y lo sagrado en contextos populistas y revolucionarios.

SPA 175 — Contemporary Latin American Feminist Activisms and Art
Haley Williams
In this course, we will explore contemporary Latin American feminist activist movements resisting heteropatriarchal violences with attention to artistic production. Centering the disruptive discourses and use of viral hashtag trends fostered by contemporary feminist activisms in regions from the Southern Cone to the United States, we will consider how geopolitical location, identity, and positionality affect the construction and perpetuation of counter-publics and how activists continue the feminist assembly through art. By reappropriating the diverse tools of neoliberal heteropatriarchy, restructuring "public" spheres like the streets, the screen, and the page, these movements relocate the crisis of gender and sexual-based violences from the "private" and invisible sphere to the "public" where it can no longer be ignored.
