Emily Celeste Vázquez Enríquez

Professor Vázquez' manuscript, Border Biomes: Ecological Imaginaries of American Migration Trails (under contract with Vanderbilt University Press), examines 20th and 21st-century Mexican, Mexican American, and Indigenous literature that engages with the ecological realities of geopolitical boundaries in Central and North America. This book puts into dialogue the fields of border and migration studies with ecocriticism, reframing the study of borders in the foreground of their multilayered ecologies. 

Her work examines ecopolitics in transnational contexts, focusing on the relationships between migrants, border communities, and border ecologies, as well as the environmental racism immigrants face. Central to her research are animal and plant studies, areas in which she has published in various peer-reviewed journals, often considering the multispecies relationships that arise from contexts of mass displacement within the current frameworks of climate change and other environmental pressures.
