From Mother’s Milk, Not Medical Ink: Postpartum Visibility and Disobedience in Contemporary Latin American Fiction

Diana Aramburu
Associate Professor, Department of Spanish
Chair, Graduate Program in Spanish and Portuguese Studies

This presentation examines autobiographical representations of the postpartum experience of the motherwriter, focusing on the reencounter with medical spaces and professionals after childbirth in contemporary Latin American matrifocal fiction. These works challenge the traditional invisibility of the postpartum body, and in doing so, they open up new ways of making diverse postpartum experiences visible. By creating literary spaces for disobedient writing, these works center maternal protagonism in both pain and pleasure.
