Portuguese is an exceptionally rich language with deep historical roots and global reach, spoken by hundreds of millions of people from South America to Western Europe, from Africa to the Indian subcontinent, Australasia and China. The official language of eight countries representing four continents (Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor), Portuguese is also spoken in former Portuguese colonies and areas of influence such as Goa (India) and Macau (China), and in immigrant communities in the United States stretching from California’s Central Valley to southern New England. |

In addition to offering language training, an undergraduate Minor in Luso-Brazilian Studies, and a full range of courses, the UC Davis Portuguese Program actively promotes the study of Luso-Brazilian culture and society, and fosters community through sponsorship of lectures, conferences, clubs, and cultural events. We are fully integrated into the Department of Spanish and Portuguese*, and actively encourage Luso-Hispanic dialog at the levels of language, literature, and culture. |
